SILENT SPACES

Ghost Town, 2015
Acrylic on canvas
11" x 14"
There are many ghost towns in America.  They were thriving in the mining or manufacturing days, but when their resources were used up, they were abandoned. They evoke lost purpose, disuse, change and decay - a powerful reminder of impermanence. Nothing is left but the elements of nature.

Staircase, 2014
Acrylic on canvas
18" x 24"
I liked the quality of this circular staircase going up to nothing in this abandoned industrial building.

Enfilade, 2014
Acrylic on canvas
16" x 20"
In architecture, enfilade refers to an arrangement of doorways connecting a suite of rooms with a vista down the whole length of the suite. It suggested an endless row of neglected rooms. I liked the mystery of the empty frames that were left behind. We can only guess at the stories those paintings told.

WELCOME TO SWIRL WORLD

Crave, 2014
Acrylic on canvas
18" x 24"
The ghosts that haunt this room left their mark:  the grafitti seems to tell their story and give a warning.  The devilish imp reminds us to beware of greed and desire.  The high life, like the sumptuous red couch, may come to ruin.

Lost Piano, 2014
Acrylic on canvas
18" x 24"
Detroit has thousands of abandoned buildings, many that were architectural gems.  I was drawn to this room in a Detroit structure because of the forgotten piano dumped unceremoniously on the floor.
